Breweries Across Philadelphia

Breweries Across Philadelphia

If you’re looking for a city with a thriving local brewing scene, you would be hard-pressed to find a city better than Philadelphia — in fact, there is an entire Philadelphia neighborhood named Brewerytown! There are over 90 craft breweries in the city and the surrounding area, and each has its own unique touch. If you love craft beer, Philadelphia is the perfect city for you. Here are 10 of our favorite local breweries.

1. Dock Street Brewery

Dock Street Brewery is well-deserving of the first spot on this list, as it is Philadelphia’s first craft brewery. Established in 1985, it became so popular at its West Philly location that it was able to open another location in South Philly.

Along with new beers every week, Dock Street Brewery offers delicious pizza, brewery tours and craft cocktails. It also regularly hosts parties, games and other events, making Dock Street Brewery a great place to stop throughout the week. Dock Street Brewery is the perfect place to begin your exploration of Philadelphia breweries.

2. Crime and Punishment Brewing Co.

If you’re a fan of theming in your breweries, you’ll love Crime and Punishment Brewing Co. Blending Russian literature and craft beer, Crime and Punishment Brewing appeals to book and beer lovers everywhere. Crime and Punishment’s imaginative beers are inspired by tradition, innovative techniques and international ideas.

If you’re hungry, this brewery’s unique beers go well with its Russian-influenced menu. Stop by Crime and Punishment Brewing in the Brewerytown neighborhood for one of Philadelphia’s most unique breweries.

3. Evil Genius Beer Company

Evil Genius Beer is best known around Philly for making delicious beers with hilarious names. With previous names including There’s No Crying in Baseball, #Adulting, and We’ve Been Trying to Reach You About Your Car’s Extended Warranty, there’s a drink and a laugh for everyone at Evil Genius Beer.

Aside from beers, Evil Genius offers delicious food, open mics, game nights, charity nights and more. Evil Genius Beer is located in Fishtown, Philadelphia, and has a pet-friendly outdoor Beer Garden.

4. 2nd Story Brewing Co.

2nd Story Brewing is about passion. There, they believe the first story you tell strangers talks about who you are and what you do, while the second story talks about what you love and what you’re passionate about. At 2nd Story Brewing, you’ll find passion for craft beer — which you can watch being brewed on the second floor of the building.

The only brewery located in the Old City portion of Philly, 2nd Story Brewing is a perfect place to stop after seeing the historical sights of Philadelphia for food and a drink. For unique and delicious hand-crafted beers, you can’t go wrong with 2nd Story Brewing.

5. Mainstay Independent Brewing Company

At Mainstay Independent Brewing Company, the history of both brewing and Philadelphia are heavy focuses, as seen in beers like the Birthplace Porter and Constitution Lager. Mainstay Independent’s patio overlooking the Delaware River is the perfect place to enjoy authentic, traditional Philadelphia beers as you soak in the history and natural beauty of Philadelphia.

Mainstay Independent doesn’t just serve beer — its Craft Hall is the largest beer hall in Philadelphia, with a gourmet kitchen, two full bars, plenty of seating areas, a music stage and even a playground for kids.

6. Attic Brewing Co.

Attic Brewing began, as the name implies, in the owners’ attic, and it is the first craft brewery in Philadelphia’s Germantown neighborhood. Attic Brewing has plenty of options with 12 beers on tap, but it also adds an element of environmental and social responsibility to the brewery scene. It takes its environmental impact seriously, implementing sustainable business practices across the company, and the owners always donate a portion of their profits to local arts and charities.

7. Two Locals Brewing Company

Founded by brothers Richard and Mengistu, Two Locals Brewing Company is Philadelphia’s first Black-owned brewery. You can order Nubian — a brown ale — and the Prolific IPA at Craft Hall, local bars or bottle shops and through the official website.

As the company quickly gains support and recognition, be on the lookout for other products, like Who You Wit?, a Belgian witbier released in 2021, when the brewery launched. Following this new company’s growth, they are currently looking for a brick-and-mortar location where visitors can purchase their brand.

8. Twisted Gingers Brewing Company

If you’re looking for a creative brewery, look no further than Twisted Gingers Brewing Company. Along with the eight beers on tap, Twisted Gingers serves milkshake IPAs, beer slushies and delicious pizzas with beer-infused dough.

For those who love drinking beer in a positive, optimistic environment, Twisted Gingers is the perfect place. Its Celebration Wall, where you can write your most recent accomplishments, is an apt visual representation of the positive energy surrounding the brewery.

9. Yards Brewing Company

In operation since 1994, Yards Brewing Company is located in the Northern Liberties area. As the first brewery in the state to run entirely on wind power, Yards is committed to having an economical on-site brewery in Philadelphia, so every beer you taste will be as fresh as possible.

Its Extra Special Ale brew is award-winning, and the brewing company offers delicious food in the taproom to go along with the beer. Yards has plenty of beers on tap in a mixture of signature and seasonal offerings, warranting visits throughout the year.
